Oral Microbiome Testing & the Future of Perio Treatment | Dr. Ed Zuckerberg

August 27, 2025 · 66 min

Dr.

Show notes

Dr. Ed Zuckerberg tested his own saliva before and after a cleaning: three weeks later, his P. gingivalis levels were right back where they started. He explains why, how P. gingivalis is linked to heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer's, why RNA-based saliva tests tell you more than DNA tests, and the new perio therapies coming next.

In this episode:

- The perio pyramid: from early colonizers to the "red zone" bacteria

- How P. gingivalis toxins can cross the blood-brain barrier

- The 1995 antibody study that kept P. gingivalis away for nine months

- New research on P. gingivalis, heart disease and diabetes

- His own saliva test results before and after scaling and root planing

- Why RNA tells you more than DNA in saliva testing

- Custom probiotics, senolytics and research on regrowing bone

- Why patients say no to perio treatment, and how education changes that

Plus dental news: the Colorado dentist found guilty, McDonald's says Grimace is a taste bud, and the latest on fluoride supplements.

Dr. Ed Zuckerberg graduated from NYU College of Dentistry in 1978 and practiced in Brooklyn and Dobbs Ferry, New York, until 2013. He lectures on the oral-systemic connection, is a venture partner at Revere Partners, the first independent venture fund for oral health, and is chief dental officer at Viome. He treats patients part-time in Cupertino, California.
